The Grand Canyon in my opinion is one of the earth’s most beautiful forms. The burnt oranges, deep reds, and rich browns have always been appealing to my eyes. Not only the visual beauty of the space, but the immensity has always intrigued me. There is something about the feeling one gets when submerged into a space that is significantly larger than one self. I find this feeling to be peaceful, a quiet space for me to reconnect with nature and my inner spirit. Using a honeycomb pattern and the warm color palette illustrates the layers of rock and the horizon line of the canyon. When researching ponchos many of what I liked were reminiscent of 60’s and 70’s style vintage apparel. I wanted to somehow give my piece a vintage feel so I decided to bleach parts of my fabric. The several layers of line, color and texture within the skins of both onions and garlics I have always found really beautiful. Using elastic yarns in combination with cotton yarns I was able to create new textures and ripples of knit fabric. I then decided to dye some of my knits in an onion skin dye bath. Using ladders and variations of stitch sizes I layered several knits on top of one another to create a transparent, textural material. The mustard yellows, rust oranges and varied stripes seen throughout the show in the clothing, graphics, and dance floors are what inspire this chunky knit two piece.
